Life update: For the past 2 months (time flies!?), I’ve been going back to school.
Specifically, I’m attending the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance 2.0 course, or ACLP for short. It’s a course that teaches you how to conduct SkillsFuture Singapore-funded courses. How meta. 😂
Why I’m taking the course: I’ve recently gotten the opportunity to conduct courses for a training provider. But the catch was that I need to be ACLP-certified.
So, I duly signed up for ACLP. I needed somewhere to dump my SkillsFuture credit before $500 of it expires at the end of this year anyway. 😂
There’s more to teaching than talking
ACLP has 3 modules. I’ve passed the first ✌️ and started the second one last week. And so far, the course has been going well.
Not because it’s easy (you’d think conducting an assessment is straightforward, but nooooo, there are many details you might not realise you need to think about until you need to), but because I’ve learnt so much from it so far.
I’ve realised there’s more to conducting courses and workshops than just standing at the front and talking non-stop. For example, you can organise activities that encourage the attendees to learn more actively.
There are also structures to follow for delivering effective lessons! (At this point, I must mention how my instructor commended me for conducting a lesson that demonstrated Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory the most completely. 🤩)
Classes and assessments
Some ACLP course runs happen full time during the day. But I intentionally signed up for a course run with evening and weekend classes because I didn’t want the classes to eat into my work hours.
So, when I have in-person weekday evening classes, I’d knock off work about an hour earlier to go to class.
There are also written assignments and practical assessments to do.
I usually work on my assignments after work hours or during weekends. As for the practical assessments, I found the first module’s challenging. (Shout-out to my newsletter subscriber T, who practised with me for my second practical assessment!) But I think they’ll get easier from here.
What’s next?
My course will run until the start of early Jan. Originally, when I signed up, it was because I just wanted to get the cert.
But now, I find I’m genuinely keen to learn more to improve myself and become an effective trainer. So, I’m looking forward to this in the weeks to come.

Liability limit for government construction consultants from 1 Dec
From 1 Dec, government construction contracts must include a limited liability clause for consultants.
This is a clause that caps the amount a consultant has to pay if the contract goes sideways and they’re found responsible for it.
Previously, there might have been no limit on consultants’ liability, which meant they had to pay more for professional indemnity insurance that provided sufficient coverage. As a result, some consultants preferred not to take up government contracts in the first place.
